On November 22, 2016, a federal judge blocked an Obama administration rule to extend mandatory overtime pay from taking effect. U.S District Judge Amos Mazzant, in Sherman, Texas, agreed with 21 states and a variety of business groups, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce that the rule is unlawful and granted their motion for a nationwide injunction. The rule, issued by the Labor Department, was to take effect December 1. The injunction is not a final decision; rather it means that it preserves the status quo. The overtime rule could still go into effect at a later date if the Department of Labor appeals and wins its case.
